Shaping the Future of Cancer Care: Inside the Cardiff Cancer Research Hub

The Cardiff Cancer Research Hub is transforming cancer care in Wales. Through groundbreaking clinical trials, expert collaboration, and patient-centered innovation, the Hub offers faster access to treatments, tackles health inequalities, and builds a brighter future for cancer patients and their families.
We’re extremely proud to part-fund the exciting Cardiff Cancer Research Hub. This dynamic working partnership between Velindre University NHS Trust, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and Cardiff University hosts some of our leading clinical trials and treatments. The aim of the Hub is to build an infrastructure to safely and efficiently deliver more clinical trials in Wales than ever before.
Since its launch, the Hub has recruited the first patient, Agustina Spooner, to take part in its first ever clinical trial. Commenting on the importance of taking part in the trial, Agustina said:
“When a patient is diagnosed, the most important question for the patient is ‘how long have I got? Am I going to see my grandchildren grow up?’

The Hub will be a focus for research excellence and collaboration.
Led by expert clinicians and researchers, it will offer quicker and easier access to research and life-changing treatments for our patients in South East Wales and beyond.
The impact on patients and families
Patients and their families in Wales are beginning to see meaningful improvements in cancer care, thanks to a growing focus on research-driven innovation. One of the key goals is to significantly increase access to cutting-edge cancer trials for Welsh patients. By attracting more clinical trials to Wales, especially those funded by industry or involving multiple organisations, more patients have the opportunity to benefit from the latest advances in treatment without needing to travel far from home.
This surge in research activity is the result of strong collaboration between academics and clinicians who are working hand-in-hand to design and deliver complex studies. These partnerships are helping to fast-track the discoveries from laboratory research into real-world treatments through a more efficient “bench-to-bedside” approach. The result is a research pipeline that not only meets the growing demand from patients but also aligns with the needs of the pharmaceutical industry for innovative, trial-ready environments.
Importantly, this research expansion is also helping to tackle health inequalities. By ensuring that clinical trials are accessible across Wales, the initiative is reducing disparities in cancer care and giving all patients an equal chance to benefit from research breakthroughs.
At the heart of this transformation is a commitment to building capacity for the future. Investment in staffing and infrastructure is enabling Wales to support more complex, high-quality clinical trials. At the same time, efforts to grow a future-focused research workforce, by increasing the number of clinical academics and making it easier to carry out research across the NHS and academic sectors we are laying the foundation for continued progress. Together, these changes are helping to deliver better outcomes for cancer patients and their families, and positioning Wales as a leader in bold, innovative research in both solid tumour and haematology care.
